Wildenberg Castle

Dorfstraße 4, 63931 Kirchzell

The romantic Wildenberg Castle can only be reached on foot. The easy hike is well worth the effort. The castle ruins offer a magnificent view of the valley.

The impressive ruins of Wildenberg Castle (colloquially known as Wildenburg) are hidden on the spur of the Schlossberg, high above the Mud valley. The Lords of Dürn, who were also the patrons of Amorbach Monastery, are thought to have built this castle in the Staufer era. Marvel at the ornate window arcades and the Palas with its gigantic fireplace. Discover signs of the numerous stonemasons and inscriptions of its builders. Did Wolfgang von Eschenbach really write his "Parzival" at the castle around 1200? What happened after the earthquake of 1356? Was it Götz von Berlichingen‘s "Helle Haufen" that burned down the castle in 1524? You can find out more on a guided tour, which takes you up the keep and down into the vaulted cellars.

Free admission.

In the forest north-east of Kirchzell-Preunschen. Accessible on foot from the Watterbacher Haus forest museum.
