How did people used to live and work in the Odenwald? The Odenwald Open-Air Museum brings the past back to life.

The open-air museum at the former fish ponds of the Amorbach monastery is a popular destination for families as it brings the past back to life. Grandparents find things from the everyday life of their childhood and start talking enthusiastically. For the children and grandchildren, it becomes clear how difficult but also idyllic life was in past decades. The historical buildings in the open-air museum have been moved from their original locations to Gottersdorf. They provide deep insights into the mostly simple, but also very fascinating past of the former rural living and working world. The 16 houses range from the modest day laborer‘s cottage to the stately large farm, from the village post office to the country cobbler‘s shop, from the green spelt kiln to the brickworks, covering a period from the 17th to the 20th century. Old craft techniques and farming methods are presented at regular intervals.

One and a half to three hours long; educational tours on the following topics: Childhood at the beginning of the last century, Rural life around 1920, From grain to bread, The farm garden - great-grandma‘s garden as supermarket and pharmacy - and what did people eat in winter?; English on request.
