Zwingenberg Castle

Schlossstrasse 1, 69439 Zwingenberg

The imposing Zwingenberg Castle towers high above the Neckar Valley. The Zwingenberg Castle Festival takes place against this romantic backdrop every year.

The imposing Zwingenberg Castle is situated on a mountain spur sloping down to the southwest between the deep Wolfsschlucht gorge and the Neckar valley. The castle probably dates back to the Staufer period, more precisely to the 12th/13th century. The well-preserved building, which has been frequently rebuilt over the last few centuries, is one of the most impressive fortresses in the Neckar Valley and has been in the possession of the Margrave of Baden family since 1808. The various owners over the centuries have changed the appearance of the castle to such an extent that it can now be described as a palace. The castle is currently inhabited by Prince Ludwig von Baden and his family. The best view of the castle is from the opposite side of the Neckar or from aboard one of the excursion boats on the Neckar.

Every summer since 1983, the castle festival has been held here against a romantic backdrop. The annual program includes the opera "Der Freischütz". The composer Carl Maria von Weber is said to have known the Wolfsschlucht himself and to have been inspired to write his work here.

Rooms can be hired at the castle for festivities and family celebrations. Weddings can be held in the romantic 18th century castle chapel.
