Walldürn pilgrimage basilica

Burgstraße 26, 74731 Walldürn

The Basilica of St. George in Walldürn is still an important place of pilgrimage in the Odenwald. Every year after Pentecost, thousands of believers make the pilgrimage to Walldürn on foot.

The Walldürn pilgrimage basilica, as it can be seen today, was built between 1698 and 1728 and is still one of the most beautiful baroque buildings with a magnificent interior in the Odenwald. The Basilica of St. George in Walldürn became famous in 1330 due to the miracle of the Holy Blood. During the holy mass, the consecrated chalice fell over after the consecration due to the carelessness of the priest Heinrich Otto, leaving an image of the crucified Christ and 11 heads of Christ with crowns of thorns (Veronicae) on the cloth. The cloth is still kept in the basilica today. In 1626, Father Hoffius had a chapel built between the old tower and the nave to the north for the altar of blood made of white alabaster. In 1962, Pope John XXIII elevated the pilgrimage basilica to the status of "Basilica Minor". To this day, the basilica in Walldürn is a famous place of pilgrimage. Pilgrims from all over the world come to Walldürn on foot on various routes to see the miracle of the blood. The annual main pilgrimage period always begins on the Sunday after Pentecost and extends over a period of four weeks.

Various guided tours on request.

The chapel is open around the clock. Groups can book a guided tour of the church with or without organ playing for a fee
