Dauchstein Castle

Burg-Dauchstein-Straße, 74862 Binau(210 m über NN)

The origins of Dauchstein Castle in Binau are largely unknown. The keep and some remains of the walls are still well preserved.

The predecessor of today‘s Dauchstein Castle was probably built in the early 11th century by the Counts of Lauffen. It is only from the 14th century onwards that there are any records.

The castle was probably built as a customs route for shipping on the Neckar. According to legend, the ships were stopped with a chain stretched across the Neckar.

Once the customs duty had been paid, the chain was lowered and the ship could pass.

The hillside castle stands on a limestone tufa rock on the Neckar, which was formed by a highly calcareous water source.

The castle is privately owned, but can be visited from the outside at any time.
